Life of a Servant
Module 1 Take-Home Exercises
Complete both parts of the assignment below. We ask that you pray before, during and after doing this work so that it can be a way for you to grow with Christ rather than feeling like homework.
Part 1 (word minimum: 400, no maximum)
A servant needs continued exposure to God and His Word. This assignment is intended as practice in this habit. We will read the book, Service, from the series Paradise of the Spirit by the late Bishop Youannis. Read Chapter 1 (Introduction) & Chapter 2 (pg 1-19), and the Prayer section of Chapter 3 (pg 27-30). (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1r9KufY_JG4ho5Q2vw7W-R107gmUzqops/view?usp=sharing).
Please describe the lessons you learned from these chapters and how you plan to use these lessons to grow in your service. Feel free to finish the whole book; all chapters are very beneficial.
Part 2 (word minimum: 400, no maximum)
Read The 2nd Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy Chapter 2
Memorize one verse from this reading and keep it in a nice notepad or a post-it note as a reminder in your service.
Write out why did you choose this verse?
St Paul gives several commandments and instructions towards the end of the chapter.
Which one would you like to work on and why?
Based upon this chapter and its direct messages, write a personal prayer that you can use in the future when you can’t come up with words to pray. Write it out in the notepad or post-it note. You can find many examples of similar prayers in the commentaries of Fr. Tadros Malaty where he writes out a prayer in response to reading a section of the Bible. The following is an example based on verses 11-13:
"I have been given many opportunities to be faithful to Your holy Name and to endure hardships for Your glory. But I have consistently denied You and denied the delight of reining with You. Christ Jesus, You are consistent in character whereas I am inconsistent. You are always faithful, always waiting, and will never deny me; a child of the Most High, made in Your Image..."
